On August 11, TRECA Digital Academy students visited the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty, OH.
The Ohio Caverns are the largest in the state, with over 2 miles of surveyed passageways ranging in depth from 30 feet to 103 feet. Students took a 50-minute, one-mile walk through the caverns where they learned about cave formations, how speleothems are formed, how minerals are deposited, and the slow evaporation rate in a cave system. We learned that stalactites hang from the ceiling while stalagmites grow from the cave floor, and when they grow together, they form a pillar or column.
