On October 23, TRECA Digital Academy students visited Lowe-Volk Park and Nature Center in Crestline, OH.
A naturalist had two mist nets set up that are used for bird banding. Students saw several song sparrows up close and even had the opportunity to pet one! They learned about why birds migrate, how bird are classified, and what measurements are taken during bird banding studies. Several students helped release the birds caught back into the park.
Families also met several of the nature center’s animal ambassadors, including box turtles, spotted salamanders, a tree frog, toads, a corn snake, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. After a short lunch break, students finished the afternoon with a nature hike through the woods where they learned about different flora and fauna, the different types of trees in the area, and the impact of invasive species.
