TRECA Students Visit Beech Creek Gardens & Nature Preserve

October 03, 2024

On September 27, TRECA Digital Academy students visited Beech Creek Gardens & Nature Preserve in Attica, OH.

Beech Creek is a nature preserve with more than 181 acres that provides opportunities for students to interact with nature and educate them on how to be good stewards of the environment. Students participated in the Living Things/Habitats program during our visit. This program provided students with a hands-on, inquiry experience where they could explore the requirements living things need in any habitat. Students also learned about the interaction between living and nonliving components of a habitat.

We visited the Amazing Garden where students had up-close encounters with a tortoise, snake, and gecko. Students learned the difference between turtles and tortoises before meeting Sherman the tortoise. We then took a trip to the butterfly garden to see and feed many different types of butterflies. After hiking to Raptor Hallow Sanctuary, students learned about owls, eagles, and a laughing kookaburra. The staff even held a live flight training session for an owl and laughing kookaburra right in front of us. We ended our visit with a guided trail walk where students learned about wetlands and habitats, why we need to protect our wetlands, and why wetlands are one of the most endangered environments.
