On May 20, TRECA Digital Academy students visited Freshwater Farms of Ohio in Urbana, OH.
Freshwater Farms of Ohio is the largest indoor fish hatchery in the state of Ohio. They specialize in rearing Rainbow Trout, from egg to adult stocking fish. It takes about one and a half to two years to raise a market-size trout. Students went on a behind-the-scenes tour that included educational exhibits and displays where they learned about different phases of fish growth and what is involved in producing their fish stock. Students got up close and personal with rare, endangered fish, learned about the science of aquaculture, and explored what biodiversity really means. Students were also able to get hands-on at the sturgeon petting zoo, the water critter touch tank which held salamanders, toads, and painted turtles, and participate in a trout feeding frenzy! This was a great behind-the-scenes tour to learn about fish lifecycles and biodiversity!
