TRECA Students Visit Dawes Arboretum

March 06, 2025

Posted in Events

On February 26, TRECA students took a field trip to the Dawes Arboretum in Newark, OH.

The Dawes Arboretum is a nearly 2,000-acre tree museum dedicated to enriching lives through the conservation of trees and nature. Students were split into two groups for a guided tour down the Maple Syrup Trail. On the walk, families learned about Native Americans, early American pioneers, and modern-day maple syrup tappers. We also learned about the sap-gathering process, different tools used to make maple syrup, and why maple trees are the best to tap. It takes about 40-50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup, and that tapping does damage to trees. Because of this,  tappers need to change the site of the drill each year if they use the same tree.
