In order to provide students with appropriate instruction and educational services, it is necessary for TRECA to maintain extensive educational and personal information. It is essential that pertinent information in these records be readily available to appropriate school personnel, be accessible to the student’s parent(s) or the student in compliance with the law, and yet be guarded as confidential information. TRECA collects directory information for students and their families, when students in enroll and through out their time as students.
TRECA uses contact information to communicate with students and their families in order to facilitate their education. Student and family directory infomration is only accessible to TRECA staff and not shared with any third parties. Addresses, email, SMS consent and phone numbers will not be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes.
While FERPA permits schools to adopt a Directory Information Policy allowing the release of “directory information” to the public under certain circumstances without consent, schools are not required to do so. Whereas the School has not adopted such a policy so permitting, the School’s policy is not to release education records or personally identifiable information in the absence of explicit consent from a parent or student over the age of eighteen. Personally identifiable information includes but is not limited to SMS opt-in consent, which the District is prohibited from sharing, selling, or leasing to third parties or affiliates.
The following rights exist:
Upon enrollment in TRECA Digital Academy, families are afforded the opportunity to participate in the academy's official text messaging program. This program enables TRECA staff to utilize SMS text messaging as a primary means of communication with both students and their families. The student enrollment packet includes a dedicated section allowing families to indicate their preference to opt in or out of receiving text messages on their personal devices. Returning families are provided the same opportunity to update their preferences at the start of each academic year through the returning student packet. An example of this packet can be found here.
Students and families who wish to opt out of texting simply need to reply "STOP" to any message sent by TRECA.
Students and families can email support@treca.org or submit a ticket here.
TRECA provides notice to families annually, in accordance with the procedures set forth under administrative regulations, of the rights held by parents and eligible students under the law and this policy.
Upon providing consent to receive SMS communications from us, we want to assure you that your phone number and consent will never be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing purposes. Your information is used solely for communication with you.
