Digital Academy students visit the Learning Tree Farm

Posted in Events

On Wednesday, October 25, TRECA Digital Academy students visited the Learning Tree Farm. It was a chilly day, but students were bundled up and ready to learn! Students toured the farm and learned all about pioneer living. They visited the 1800’s farmhouse and saw the toys children played with back then. They also toured the bank barn that was built to protect the animals from the cold. Students were able to meet several animals including goats, baby pigs, and even took turns catching and holding chickens! They learned that ducks produce more eggs than chickens, and it takes 24 hours for a chicken to lay an egg. After visiting the barn, students toured the garden and learned about different kinds of plants. They were able to taste test radishes, green peppers, sugar leaf, and peas. The day ended with a hike in the woods and a trip to the pumpkin patch. It was a fun-filled day on the farm! Thank you to all the families that joined us, and thank you to the Learning Tree Farm for having us!

Student makes trip to Texas to help victims of Hurricane Harvey

Posted in Stories

Frank Crotinger, 10th grader at TRECA Digital Academy, recently made a trip to Houston, Texas with his church to help victims of hurricane Harvey. When they arrived, they could immediately see the destruction. There were piles of drywall, cabinets, bathroom sinks, toilets, and furniture sitting on the curb of every house. They quickly went to work moving all the bad furniture to the curb, removing drywall, and treating the mold. Frank shared, “In many ways the clean-up is worse than the hurricane itself, and the hurricane victims could still use a lot of help! They’ve never been put in a situation like this before and it requires a lot of time and money.” He admitted that the trip was a lot of hard work, but by the end, he was really glad he went.

Thank you for sharing your trip with us Frank! It sounds like you made a big difference in the lives of many!

Digital Academy students tour the Ohio Statehouse

Posted in Events

On Friday, October 6, TRECA Digital Academy students visited Capitol Square, a complex that includes the Ohio Statehouse, Senate Building, and the Atrium. Students were able to tour several buildings and learn about the history, architecture, and the legislative process. The tour began in the Map Room and connects the Senate Building and the Statehouse. In the Map Room, students were able to see the famous floor map that depicts the state’s 88 counties using six different types of marble from around the world. Students then visited the Rotunda, which has been the site of many gubernatorial inaugurations. Students toured the Senate Chamber where senators meet to discuss and vote on legislation, and they also saw the Governor’s Office, now mainly used as a ceremonial office. The Ohio Statehouse represents one of America’s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture and is one of the oldest working statehouses in the United States. Digital Academy students visit Union Ridge Wildlife Center

Posted in Events

On Friday, September 22, TRECA Digital Academy students visited the Union Ridge Wildlife Center in Wilkesville, OH. The center is a non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, and the field trip provided an inside-look at what it takes to run a wildlife center! Students went on a three-hour walking tour where they learned the difference between wild and domesticated animals, how and why wildlife rescue centers are necessary, and more! On the tour they met many of the center’s furry residents, including Gumby the camel, Jimmy the bald eagle, and Noah, a 2-year-old tiger. After the tour, students split into groups for hands-on learning activities that involved dissecting owl pellets, making a magic book about what they learned, and completing a bird beak adaptation lab. It was a great experience for our students and families! Thank you to the Union Ridge Wildlife Center for having us!
